2 min read
⚡ TL;DR Most orgs prepay credits on the Console Billing page; credits expire after a year. Max, Ultra and Team include monthly API credits. Invoiced orgs pay monthly in arrears.

How does paying for the API actually work? Here's the Claude API payment model.

Billing guide. 💳

💳 Claude API Payment with Prepaid Credits

Buy credits on the Console Billing page. You're charged for successful calls, though a request that times out mid-run may still bill.

🎁 Plan-Included Credits

Max, Ultra and Team include monthly API credits after linking a Console org. They're used first, expire each cycle, and don't work in Claude Code or the apps.

⏳ Expiry and Auto-Reload

Purchased credits expire one year after purchase and aren't refundable. Auto-reload buys more when your balance drops below a threshold.

💡 Pro tip Buy smaller amounts with auto-reload rather than a large block that may expire.

🧾 Invoicing

Organizations with a Sales arrangement are billed monthly in arrears at pay-as-you-go rates, via Stripe invoice.
